Ignacy Jan Paderewski: Tom III: Utwory fortepianowe op. 21 i 23 (Sonata i Wariacje) (Piano Works Opp. 21 and 23: Sonata and Variations)
The present edition of Dzieła Wszystkie (The Complete Works) of Ignacy Jan Paderewski contains all of his compositions that have been found by now, including some which are printed here for the first time. The aim of the edition is to render and spread the works of the distinguished Polish composer, pianist and polititian. The edition is based on critically examined sources, so the musical text has been rendered in a form as close as possible to the composer's intention. The base sources for this edition are prints authorised by the composer (in most cases the first prints), or, in case of the works that have not been hitherto printed (this case applies mostly to juvenile works) - the autograph.
Volume III of Ignacy Jan Paderewski's Complete Works contains two monumental compositions for piano, the Sonata in e-flat minor op. 21 and the Variations and Fugue in e-flat minor op. 23, both completed in 1903, when Paderewski was composing the last works in his output. During a relatively lengthy, year-long break in concert tours, while the artist was staying at his Swiss residence, Riond-Bosson in Morges, he also composed the cycle of 12 Songs op. 22 to words by Catulle Mendűs and made sketches for his Symphony in b-minor. The present publication has been compiled on the basis of the first edition published by the firm Ed. Bote und G. Bock in Berlin in 1906, and, as an auxiliary source, the autograph/final manuscript from 1903.
