Giovanni Battista Riccio (1563-after 1620) was a prominent Venetian organist and composer whose music, long forgotten, is now the focus of renewed scholarly attention. The critical edition of his music is one of the outcomes of a long-term project dedicated to the study and promotion of incomplete polyphony, carried out by a research group within the Department of Cultural Heritage at the University of Padua.
With its 51 compositions, Il terzo libro delle divine lodi musicali (1620) is by far Riccio’s most extensive collection. The volume includes 37 sacred concertos, 12 instrumental works, and 2 compositions for voices and instruments—representing the most innovative works of the collection.
The critical edition of the Terzo libro is divided into two volumes. The present first volume includes all compositions for one and two voices: 26 motets (10 for solo voice and 16 for two voices) and 7 instrumental canzonas (1 for a single instrument and 6 for two instruments), all with basso continuo.
